Landsort diary 3rd July 2016

25 nets opened at 0400 and the rest opened as the morning progressed and the wind reduced a bit. A healthy total of 29 birds by the time the nets were closed at 1100 of 9 species. Included in this were the first two young Wryneck of the year and another Magpie.

 

With 74 birds in the first three days of July, this year is good evidence that it is worth ringing during the month as many young birds from on the island are being caught.

 

No doubt we will catch many of them again as the season progresses, so perhaps captures of 'new' bids will be fewer than normal - time will tell. Nevertheless it is good to catch birds that we know for certain are born on Landsort.

 

Anders built some more boardwalks during the morning while Bosse went to do some migration watching and then up to Saltmar.

 

Bosse, Lena and Anders leave this afternoon, so it should be just Chris & Kay overnight.

Rain at 0400 delayed opening until 0645, when all 30 nets were opened until 1200 with 22 new birds of 9 species, including our first Reed Bunting for a while.

 

A guided talk for 4 people took place at 1100.

 

Anders made some replacement boardwalks during the morning, while Bosse was off out migration watching early in the morning before heading up to the North in the afternoon.

Landsort diary 1st July 2016

Strong SW wind restricted nets opened at 0400 to 13, but as the wind eased more nets could be opened, with all 30 open by the time ringing finished at 1100.

 

A total of 23 new birds was a good start to the month, of 7 species with 11 Tree Sparrow caught.

 

First day of standardised ringing on Landsort went well with no problems encountered.

 

Last night Anders arrived on the last ferry, so it was three at the Obs, not 2 as reported in yesterdays diary. Tonight Bosse and Lena arrive for the weekend, so it will be five tonight.
