27 nets opened at 0400 but had to be closed by 0600 as a band of light rain with forecast thunder came in. Just 4 birds of 3 species, but included the first Spotted Flycatcher for a while.

Landsort diary 25th June 2016

All nets opened at 0400 but closed at 0745 when a shower of rain came through. Most of this passed just south of the island, so 22 nets re-opened at 0830 and then closed at 1130.

 

A total of 22 new birds was pleasing, of 11 species. A late Bluethroat, 3+cy male was a surprise but the bird was not in great condition. No feathering round the rump with many growths under the skin of the belly - tumours or similar?

 

Pleasing number of re-captures of young ringed at nest boxes, including a Marsh Tit.

 

No guided walks today, suspect most island visitors are here for the mid-summer celebrations rather than attending events.

 

Nothing planned for this afternoon, just catch up paperwork then watch the football!!!

Overnight rain delayed opening until 0700 when all 30 nets were opened until 1100. Eight new birds of 5 species including 4 1cy Lesser Whitethroat.

 

After closing a Pied Flycatcher nest box in the north was checked but found to contain 7 cold, dead eggs.

 

Relaxing day after doing that - after all it is mid-summer!!!

 

Liam leaves late this afternoon, leaving just Chris & Kay at the Obs overnight.

Early rain at 0400 delayed opening nets until 0600 when all 30 nets were opened until 1100. A total of just 5 new birds of 3 species.

 

A Green Sandpiper flew from the ground just near the road west net, nearly got it!!!

 

This afternoon will be spent repairing board walks on the north net round.

All nets opened at 0400 and closed at 1200. A total of 19 new birds of 12 species, A nice mornings ringing with a good variety, including four young blue Tits, the first of the year and another Treecreeper.

Public guided talk for two people with a kind donation in addition to the fee.

All data entered and up to date with checking nest boxes. Kay took the opportunity of Liam being here to go into Nynashamn for a shopping trip.

Liam washed and cleaned all of the multiple bird bags, some of which seem not to have been cleaned for months.

Electrics now completed for the bathroom and an outside light also fitted. Just the shower to be completed at the end of next week.

Just three at the Obs tonight: Chris, Kay and Liam.

19 nets opened at 0400 but were able to open up the remaining nets as the morning progressed and the wind dropped. A total of 17 new birds of 12 species, including the years first fledged Lesser whitethroats (3) and Wheatear (1). All nets closed at 1100.

 

In the afternoon three nest boxes were visited. One had a day old chick and 6+eggs - a late clutch of Great Tit. In the other two a brood of 4 Great Tit were ringed and a brood of 7 very healthy looking Pied Flycatcher chicks were ringed - the first of two known nest boxes.

 

Brought the day total to 28 birds of 13 species and took the year total to over 2500. A good result for this time of year.
