Landsort diary 30th July 2016

All nets opened at 0400, with two closed at 0900 when the football match next to them started. The non-standard nets closed at 1030 and Standard at 1215.

A total of 28 new birds of 16 species, including another Green Woodpecker, the third in two days and only the 11th on the Obs.

A guided talk for just one person, but he is returning in early September with some friends who wish to have guided talk.

Bosse, Janne, Marie and Kalle have all been out this morning migration watching - more on how they got on once we have sat down and heard what they have seen.

    Landsort diary 29th July 2016

All nets opened at 0400 with calm conditions. Closed at 1100 with 25 new birds of 15 species. Without doubt the best birds were 2 young Green Woodpecker, both caught on the same net round in the canopy nets. A ringing tick for Kay and only the second one ringed by Chris.

These are the 9th and 10th ever caught on Landsort and the only time two have been caught in one year. The last one caught was in 2010. Also of note was the first Wood Warbler of the year and the 23rd Wryneck, clearly a very good year for this species.

Janne left the island briefly on the morning ferry and missed seeing the Green Woodpecker, but was back with Bosse in the afternoon. Roger left the Obs today, so it is 7 again at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, Steve, Nettie, Janne, Kalle and Marie.

More information on how the migration watching went later.

    Landsort diary 28th July 2016

All nets opened at 0400 but closed at 0830 when wind increased and brought the first of what was forecast to be a series of rain showers for the rest of the morning. It turned out to be the ONLY rain shower of the morning, but it was enough to see an end to ringing for the day.

A poor total of just 11 new birds of 7 species including the fourth Magpie of the year.

See updated diary entries for the 26th and 27th for further sightings of interest - provided by Janne and Kalle.

Will be seven again at the Obs tonight.

    Landsort diary 27th July 2016

All nets except those in reed bed opened at 0400, These five were opened a bit later in the morning, once the Roe Deer which were feeding in the reeds had left - thought it best to avoid the nets being destroyed by them!!! Non-standard nets closed at 1030 and standard at 1200.

18 new birds of 10 species caught.

Drop-in guiding for four adults and one under 16 given.

After a rest it is off to thin out some of the willows near the football pitch. They are growing that thickly that birds are not going into them to feed.

Kalle, Marie and Janne have spent time migration watching, but fairly quiet. A probable Barn Swallow/ House Martin hybrid seen, first by Marie on a couple of occasions and then by Janne also, Swallow throat and flight feathers but white rump.

Will be 7 again at the Obs tonight.

    Landsort diary 26th July 2016

An overcast morning to start with all nets opened at 0400 and closed by 1100, by which time it was hot and sunny. A total of 32 new birds of 16 species.

Straight after closing we trimmed the net rides and paths as some brambles, reeds and willows were starting to get in the way. Hopefully there will not be too many more trimming sessions to do now, especially in this heat!!!

After data has been entered we will be stopping work to welcome of friends from the Isle of Man, Steve & Nettie, who are arriving later.

There will be 7 at the Obs tonight: Chris ,Kay, Kalle, Marie, Janne, Steve and Nettie

All nets opened at 0400. Non-standard closed at 1100 and Standard at 1130. 23 new birds of 13 species. the 6th Jackdaw for the year caught but unfortunately the two Green Woodpecker that spent most of the morning calling in the area did not oblige us by going in the nets!

No lecture today - this initiative has not proved to be as popular as the guided talks.

Marie, Kalle and Janne due at the Obs tonight to give five staying.
