All nets opened at 0400 and closed at 1100. Seemed like a quiet day but 21 new birds of 15 species was welcome enough. Included in this was the first fledged Spotted Flycatcher of the year, the second Thrush Nightingale and three young Blackcap.
Niklas and Per were up and out to the south for a migration watch by 0400 but were not lucky. Very few birds passing the island in almost flat calm conditions. Wisely, they decided to give it up as a poor day and caught the 0930 ferry, avoiding the really busy later ferries.
Plenty of tourists on the island, including many who seem obsessed with Pokémon. It seems we have one in our 'real world' outside the Obs front door. Well over 40 different people walking up our lane this week, head down, looking at their 'phones, not even seeing the birds in the nets alongside them - probably don't see the nets!!!!
Guess I'm old, but it seems an odd world!! Actually, no guessing - I AM old!!!
This afternoon cut back the hedges and willows along the front lane to improve lines of site looking north and hopefully keep birds lower as they pass.
Just Chris & Kay at the Obs overnight.
