At present 'Artportalan', the recording system that we usually submit our sightings and diary on (which we then copy and paste onto our blog) is not working, so this diary entry is a bit different from the usual. We will update this page once the 'glitch' is sorted; probably caused by system overload and thousands of Swedish birders try entering their weekends sightings all at once!!!
At BMAR Kay & Chris operated the nets the same as every day but with a strong SE wind not all nets could be used so 15 opened at 0645 but by the time ringing stopped at 1330 only 8 were still in use. Despite this 136 new birds of 23 species were caught, with the day dominated by 39 Bullfinch.
Liam meanwhile operated a very limited number of nets at SUDD - 3 reduced to just 1 as the wind increased and managed 8 birds of 6 species, giving 144 new birds for the day. Rasmus helped him for some of the morning and Ebba, having started there wisely retreated to the comparative comfort of BMAR and assisted us for the last few hours, kept going by an endless supply of chocolate!!!
All of the others went migration watching, mainly in the south but in other parts of the island also. As the reporting system is not working I'm not sure what was seen of note, except we have heard that great views of an Eagle Owl were obtained though we only heard about it several hours later - perhaps the 'phones weren't working!!!!!
In other news, we were treated to a very enjoyable evening and meal, courtesy of David & Karin, who were over for the weekend and joined us for some of our work on Saturday and Sunday. Great to spend time with them and a huge thanks for their hospitality.
So, having had 13 staying on Friday night and 10 last night it is back to just the 2 at the Obs tonight: Chris & Kay.
