Landsort diary 23rd October 2016

Overnight gale continued through the first part of the morning as did the rain, so no netting today. This is the second full weekend in October that no trapping has been possible.

While Mats and Lasse went off in an attempt to find the Siberian Accentor and to do some sea-watching, Liam and Chris made the most of the wet weather by sorting out the work space in the cellar. All spare timber is now easily accessible, all tools are on hooks on the wall to keep them dry when the cellar floods and the floor completely swept through. The rear window is now leaking, so all bird seed is raised off the floor to keep it dry. A dusty but worthwhile job and another one off the list.

Kay cleaned through the Observatory rooms, kitchen bathroom and mopped all floors.

Mats fitted five smoke alarms in all sleeping rooms and common areas, including the lab, so a bit safer now!

Although many birders arrived on the island on a 'twitch' none made it up to the Obs, concentrating their efforts in the village where the Accentor was seen last night. Despite many pairs of eyes on the lookout the bird was not relocated.

Over the weekend it was a pleasure to meet many of the Board of the Stockholm Ornithological Society and thank them personally for their support which played a big role in enabling the Observatory Board to employ us for the season.
