Landsort diary 20th October 2016

Rain overnight had stopped by dawn but a strong easterly wind restricted net opening to just 10 nets which were opened at 0700, as soon as it was light enough to see which could be opened safely.

It proved to be a busy day and from the first net round Bosse and Janne (who arrived on the first ferry) were kept busy emptying the nets, helped by Tore when he was between work trips, while Kay ringed the birds and Chris wrote the notes. . Eventually, about 1200 it was quiet enough for Kay & Chris to take over the net rounds.

All nets closed at 1400 with a total of 400 new birds of 20 species with Robin dominating but good numbers of other species also.

Ulf arrived on the first ferry of the day and enjoyed plenty of good birding, with some of his sightings included within the summary of notable sightings for the day. The honour of seeing the Tawny Owl, a rarity here, went to two 'unknown' birders who have been on the island for a few days and called at the Obs with 'phone pictures of it taken through their scope.
