Landsort diary 31st August 2016

22 nets opened at 0430 and closed at 1200. With 39 new birds of 13 species. Almost clam to start with but a slight wind picked up through the morning.

Kay left the island this morning to have a day in Stockholm with Sorcha before heading back to Landsort on the last ferry. Janne assisted Chris with going round the nets and writing protocols. Lucky he did, as at 1100 group turned up for a guided talk that had not been booked. Some were not happy and left but we did manage to give a good talk to 8 people and show them some birds being ringed. Thanks to Janne for doing the extra work while Chris gave the talk.

1119 birds were caught in August, the second best August catch since the Observatory started, with 2014 being the best with 1282 birds. At the end of August a total of 4435 birds had been ringed, the second highest count for this time of year behind 2006 when 5391 birds had been ringed.

Will be just three at the Obs tonight; Chris, Kay and Janne.

See yesterdays diary for additional records of sightings of interest, provided by Janne

    Landsort Diary 29th August 2016

Overnight rain extended into the early morning, so nets left closed until 0930 when the Standard round was opened, along with the 4 near the pond. All closed again at 1230.

Making the effort to open nets for just 3 hours was rewarded with the 2nd Grasshopper Warbler of the year, and a nice haul of species, including a very dark Willow Warbler
