Strong overnight winds and rain delayed opening until 0530 with only 5 nets able to be open due to the wind. These were closed at 1145 with just five new birds caught, of 5 species and 5 different ring sizes!!! Not a great days ringing, but the 2nd Cuckoo of the year made up for it a bit.
Per and Niklas had better success out migration watching, with a range of species passing the south of the island, the best being Pectoral Sandpiper (2nd for the island) and Broad-billed Sandpiper (8th for the island). Later on they had a very well deserved hat trick of great species for the day when they and Mikael flushed what they were sure was a Quail from near the football pitch. A search by all five of us resulted in the bird flushing again, but still not 100% certain of identification. The three guys went back out later and had good views, confirming this as only the 6th record for the island and the only one in the month of August. Poor ringing day, great birding day!!!!
A good guided talk to four people, including our neighbour Claes who stopped for a Fika afterwards when he was able to see the improvements being made at the Obs, the result of his support over the years.
Five at the Obs again tonight.
