Landsort diary 13th June 2016

All nets opened at 0400 and closed at 1200.

A total of 14 new birds of 12 species, with the male Serin being re-caught. First fledged Treecreeper (2) and Chaffinch (1) caught. The bird of the day (and the month) was a 1cy Parrot Crossbill, caught in the west pond net in mid-morning. Calling from a nearby tree were at least two others, but sadly these were not to be caught (today!!)

This is only the second bird of this species to have been caught on Landsort, the first being 26 years ago on the 14/10/1990. Even on quiet netting days, 'it only takes one bird'!! Surprising how big a bird it is in the hand, wing of 101mm and weighing in excess of 50g.

During the morning help given to Roger between net rounds putting up the ceiling for the toilet and this will carry on during this afternoon and this evening. Once he leaves Kay & Chris will be preparing the walls and ceiling ready for paper to be put up tomorrow.

A big push now ahead of the plumber arriving later in the week.
