Landsort diary 15th July 2016

At last, a calm and overcast morning, with all nets opened at 0400 and closed at 1045.

Well worth putting up with some very heavy mosquito activity when opening the nets as we ended up with 39 new birds of 13 species. Included in this were the first fledged Icterine Warbler and Blackcap of the year. Based on 2014 data it should be a busy period for Icterine Warbler now until the end of the month when most of them will have left.

Best day catch of the month so far, taking the July figure to past 300, more than double the numbers ever ringed in the same period since the Observatory was established in 1988.

After trying until late yesterday evening for good migration watching, but with no joy, Niklas and Bjorn tried again this morning with better results - eventually!!! Niklas persevered and was rewarded with a Sandwich Tern, his first here for several years and a notable passage of Grey Herons made the watching worthwhile.

Niklas & Bjorn left this afternoon. Bosse, Lena and Anders arrive this evening to give 5 at the Obs tonight.
