Landsort diary 18th July 2016

29 nets opened at 0400 with the remaining net opened at 0900 as the wind decreased. Non-standard nets closed at 1045 and standard nets closed at 1130.

A good number of new birds caught - 37 of 17 species, which is the highest day catch for a while and takes the year total to over 3,000. Getting a recently fledged Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was a pleasure, hopefully not the last this year!!

We also caught a Pied Flycatcher that we had ringed in the north of the island as a chick in a nest box in mid-June. This means that we have re-trapped at least one chick from the seven species that were ringed at nest boxes this year. Excellent to get these birds, especially the species where only one or two broods of chicks were ringed: Blue Tit, Robin, Marsh Tit and Pied Flycatcher. Suggests good fledging success.

A Cuckoo was trapped in the top canopy net, but as so often happens with these longer winged birds it escaped as the net was being lowered!!!

All in all a great mornings ringing and plenty of time to talk to visitors and summer guests we met as we did our rounds. Some of these will be coming to future talks but unfortunately there was no-one today for the open lecture.

Also had time for a coffee and chat the Wallin family and Tore. Ruth is growing quickly and approaching her 7th (month!!) birthday.

Bits and pieces of repairs and improvements done again today, all the repaired windows now open and have hooks on.

Kay & Chris are being joined tonight by Niklas and Per, giving four overnight and for the next few days.
