Landsort diary 31st July 2016

Only 20 nets opened at 0400 due to strong wind and one of these closed an hour later, leaving 19 nets open until all were closed at 1100. The reduced number of nets and the strong wind affected captures with only 15 new birds of 9 species. Included in these were the first two returning Reed Warblers and the first juvenile Whinchat of the year.

The month ended with 676 new birds caught, the most ever caught in July since the Observatory started, highlighting the benefits of ringing at this time of year.

Kalle, Marie, Steve and Netty all left the Obs on the 0930 ferry. It has been good to spend time with all four of them, especially Steve and Netty - our reminder of home!! We hope that both Kalle and Marie can make it back out later in the season.

Tonight there will be 6 at the Obs: Chris, Kay, Janne, Bosse, Lena and Bosse's sister who is staying for two nights.

An update on how migration watching went will follow later.
