So, another busy week on Landsort ends, but unlike the last couple of weeks it is finishing with heavy rain and a strong-ish Northerly wind, so colder than of late.
Not so many birds this week but added six more to the list for the year: Whinchat, Tree Pipit, Garden Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Thrush Nightingale and Pied Flycatcher. A pleasing selection of birds each day, with 15 different species today giving some indication of the diversity of birdlife passing through the island.
The six planters that we made the other week are performing well with Radish leaves appearing. The hint of putting coffee grounds on the soil to deter the slugs is being tried, but not yet proven!
Plenty of work other than ringing done. All of the lower wall of the Obs has been painted by Kay and is looking very smart, one of the older guys who was born here reckons the house (built as a military hospital) was erected in 1941 and he can only remember it having been painted twice since!!!
While Rasmus and Mikaela were out for the weekend Chris made use of the extra pairs of hands to mend the boardwalks in the reed-beds, a job I think everyone has been putting off for years - done without getting wellies full of water!
After reports of a Beaver in one of the bays early in the week we spent a fruitless couple of hours waiting to see it, but the plus side was lying in the sun on the rocks watching the ferry go past, enjoying the peace and quiet.
A busy week in store, off to Nynashamn shopping, strimming the grass, checking nest boxes, taking rubbish up to Norhamn ready for putting on the 'rubbish boat' on Sunday, painting the south wall and about 8 hours ringing per day.
