All nets open at 0400 and closed at 1230. A total of 40 new birds of 12 species, including the seasons first Red-backed Shrike (an adult male) and a female Pied Flycatcher. Three Thrush Nightingale were also a welcome bonus. The morning started off well with good numbers in the first net round but it soon went very quiet with several blank rounds.
Two guided talks today, led by Monica, with a total of 31 people from two organisations. Despite the poor number of birds caught late in the morning, the first group managed to see a few birds being ringed, but despite Chris and Kay keeping the nets open for longer than usual there were no birds to show the second group. Despite this they all seemed to enjoy the experience and were impressed by the information that they received.
In the afternoon, after 8.5 hours ringing and entering the data, Chris and Kay spent 4 hours cleaning the lower concrete walls of the Obs of loose paint (Chris) and Kay painted the whole of the north wall and the left hand part of the west wall with black paint. It now looks very smart next to the new red timbers and our plan is to complete the west wall tomorrow afternoon as this is the wall that everyone sees as they walk up the lane.
